Great Day for Moose Watching

I was on my way to a meeting on the other side of Algonquin park .. but I brought my camera just in case.

I saw 4 moose on 3 separate occasions. I was able to get very close. Here's three of the many pics I took.

Why do Woodpeckers Peck on Metal?

As the sun was rising this morning, I went for a walk down the road. I do it for exercise and as part of my neighbourhood watch duties for all the cottagers.

It was quiet and peaceful until I heard this loud banging up ahead. Trying to locate the woodpecker, I saw him fly off from a metal road sign.

Why do woodpeckers peck on a metal sign that doesn't hold any bugs or food for them?

Docks are out in the Water

The docks are placed back out in the water. There are chairs set up on the waterfront. The water looks inviting. Then I took the water temperature off the dock ... 35 degrees F or just above freezing!

Way too soon for swimming or kayaking. If you fell in the water, you'd last about 15 minutes before your body would start to shut down.

This is a great time for hiking in Algonquin Park, or cycling along our South Portage Road.

New Playground assembled

This week, we received our new children's playground for ages 2 - 8 years old.

Gord put it together down at the waterfront. Looks great!

This in addition to the pirate ship play house and the sand and swings playground.

Not all moose are in Algonquin park

Not all moose are in Algonquin Park. Last week I went looking for moose to photograph in Algonquin Park and came back empty.

Today, I went to help my brother, who has a house in the Riverside School subdivision and saw this baby moose.

Lucky I had my camera with me or no one would believe it.

The Ice has Left. The Lake has returned

With the warm weather we've had these last few weeks, the snow melt has happened quicker and the lake ice has melted too.

On April 1 in the afternoon, the ice left our bay. The wind pushed it out. It disappeared!

Usually we see the ice go around the 20 -24th of April. This is 3 weeks earlier than we have ever seen it. We have been on lake of bays at Beauview for almost 17 years.

I expect we'll see boats on the water this weekend. This is a great time for fishing. The trout are close to the surface. No special equipment required.

The water level is still down so you'll have to watch out for rocks.
