Lake of Bays Skating and Trout Fishing

With the cold cold weather we have had these last few days, the lake is freezing up solid. Beauview waterfront has 5 inches of ice which is enough for skating or boot hockey. This is part of the Canadian Winter experience - skating on a frozen lake! The hockey nets and sticks come out next.

I saw the first ice fishing hut go out on the lake today down by the public dock. It couldn't go too far as I still see open water beyond the islands.

Lake of Bays is a great lake for Lake trout and whitefish fishing.

What is There to Do in Muskoka !?

Christmas holidays are a week away and New Years is 2 weeks away. What is there to do in Muskoka when we didn't get a dumping of snow like we got last year. (It shouldn't be a green Christmas in Muskoka. There is snow in the forecast this coming week.) Muskoka also gets lake effect snow from Georgian Bay which is hard for the weather forecasters to predict.

It has been cold so that the ground has frozen up. That means it's good for hiking in Algonquin Park... no mud to slog through! Without the leaves on the trees you can go farther, see farther and see more wildlife. The bears are asleep so there's no worries about a bear encounter. You could see a moose or deer. (no mosquitoes either!) On my walk this weekend I saw some birds: blue jays, chickadees and a noisy woodpecker. http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/

Hidden Valley Highlands opens today on a limited basis for snow skiing and snowboarding. They have been making snow at every opportunity. More runs will open as the weather allows. http://www.skihiddenvalley.ca/ At New Years, they have Fireworks and a bonfire.

The Hotel on White House Bay

Any doubt that the White House Hotel played a central role in the social scene of this Bay would be dispelled by an afternoon spent with four ladies who recounted their own stories of adventure, entertainment and happy cottage memories.

Current residents and cottagers will know the Bay and the Road that take the name White House. They may not know that the Massey family of Brantford built a lovely white cottage in 1900 on the site that eventually became a hotel until the building’s demise over 50 years later. The Massey family owned the building for less than a decade, but its impact on the lives of people stretched through much of the 20th century.

In July of 2011, Carole Young, Jean L. Robertson, Jackie Shoffner and Pam Hanna talked with LBHF Board member Bruce MacLellan about their memories of the White House Hotel. Sonia Labatt (nee Armstrong) sent along some of her written memories. Between them, they dined at the Hotel as young girls, watched the guests come and go, greeted the steamship, delivered mail and more. In her youth, Carole played in the property when it was an abandoned but still furnished building.

Several of these ladies are life-long residents of Clovelly ‑ a popular community of cottages on the north shore of Whitehouse Bay ‑ the hotel was part of this area. (Clovelly takes its name from Clovelly, England and was given by Jane Tyrell, and early cottager.)
Also in the Bay is Wadi’s Creek, Frozen Point, Crown Island and the community accessed by Jo-Lee Point Road. South Portage Road was built in the 1960s and before then, access to this area was via White House Road from Brunel Road, or by steamship.

In 1907, the White House property was sold by the Massey family to Joel and George Alldred and converted it into a hotel. George was the son of Joel and Olive, and he and his sister helped run the business. It was a large home with a centre hall plan and a verandah on three sides. They added a bedroom wing to the east and later George added a large dining room. A second floor with bedrooms above to the west was added in the 1940s. During WW I, George and his brother Oscar went overseas in the army. Fortunately, both returned.

Olive Alldred was a tiny woman (“smaller than a minute” according to one recollection), but there was no question that she really ran the place. Known as Granny Alldred, her face became a mass of wrinkles and she eventually lost her sight and lived to around age 100. She had a big personality and a commitment that played a major role in the success of the hotel.

The steamship Iroquois made a trip around Lake of Bays each day, carrying passengers, luggage and cargo and the Royal Mail. This ship was built at South Portage around 1907 and travelled the lake until it was scuttled around 1948. Each day, except Sunday, the mailbag was dropped off on the White House dock.

“The Whitehouse Hotel was a hub for mail, afternoon tea and many meals,” said Jackie Shoffner (nee Armstrong). “It was a lovely building with many fine details, including dark paneled rooms and a mahogany stair railing that was always waxed to death.”

“Food presentation was very well done,” recalls Pam Hanna, with silver plate cutlery and a white table cloth. At breakfast, oil cloth was spread over the tables for guests staying in the roughly 15 rooms. For special occasions, delicious cakes made by the Ellis family in Baysville were served.

Ropes hung from each room for escape in case of fire and a tennis court was located on the lake side. A six hole outhouse was used when nature called. A large kitchen garden outside provided fresh vegetables throughout the summer. There was also an attractive rose garden, perhaps left over from the Massey family.

Meals were cooked by using two wood stoves in the kitchen and they were kept burning all through the day. The heat in the kitchen during the summer season must have been brutal. Electricity was never installed in the building and the power line only went into Clovelly in about 1954.

There was a long dock so the Iroquois steamship could stop to deliver mail. Rumours always suggested a victim of conflicts over prohibition liquor smuggling was buried in concrete under the dock. The stills to make liquor were located in nearby Whiskey Bay.

The delivery of mail became a right of passage for many youngsters. They were chosen to organize and deliver it to Clovelly cottagers. Sonia Labatt (nee Armstrong) performed this role when she was between 11 and 16 years old.

“It was a responsibility I took very seriously. I would walk along the shore to the Whitehouse and wait for up to three hours for the very large mail bag to arrive,” said Labatt. “Then Effie or George Aldred would sort the mail, reading aloud the name on each item. I would divide the mail into piles, put elastics around each bundle and then visit each cottage.”

The mail was delivered by the Iroqouis and in later years, in a motor boat by the Boothby place from Point Ideal. Another part of the adventure for children was a man named Kirkpatrick who lived next door to the Hotel. Straying too close to his property would attract a holler.

The White House Hotel was really more of an inn. Thanks to the Alldred family, it thrived with its own charm and personality in its day. The world was smaller and people lived at a slower pace. But the happy memories shine as brightly now as that old polished mahogany banister once did on a sunny day at Lake of Bays.

Still Swimming on Sept 24th

Even though Summer is officially over, the children staying with us this weekend went in swimming today.

They played in the boats, went down the water slide and played with their parents. To top it off, the sun came out!

Everyone staying at Beauview this weekend is attending Rachel and Andrew's wedding in Baysville.

There was an outdoor wedding this afternoon and the reception is tonight at the community centre.

We offer shuttle service as there's no taxis in Baysville. We don't want anyone drinking and driving.

Tree Trimming with a Bucket Truck

There were some dead or nearly dead branches way up in a birch tree near the cottages. Sunrise Tree Service came in with a bucket truck to take them down before they did any damage to the cottage, a guest's car or the hydro line.

Isn't she beautiful!? I got to within 15 feet of this female deer as she was having her late day meal. When I got too close she just moved away but didn't leave.

The trick is to move up closer when her head is down feeding. When her head is up, you stay still.

We have a neighbour down the road that has offered to do babysitting for our Beauview guests. Maybe the parents want some time to go out to dinner, do some shopping or see a show in town.

Audrey is 15 years old and going into Grade 10. She has her bronze medallion in swimming (required to be a lifeguard) and emergency first aid and CPR.

She has completed the Babysitting course and has her license. Also she speaks French and some Spanish.

Beauview Wipeout Zone

A new television show that's gaining popularity is Wipeout. Some of the children staying with us this weekend pretended that they are competing on the Wipeout TV show while they were playing on the iceberg waterslide, traversing the moon walk and bouncing on the water trampoline.

It was a perfect weekend to get out on the water. Canoes, kayaks and paddle boats were taken out by our guests. The new paddle wheel boats were extremely popular with little kids and some "big kids".

In our area, the last week of June is the opening of Bass Fishing season. It runs through to the end of October.
Bass fishing is a favourite of the children that stay at Beauview. We have a long wood dock that has lots of rocks and logs under it from an old crib dock. This is where the bass hide.
Children fish from the dock with worms on a hook. Even little bass put up a great fight.

Good fun and children don't need a license to fish... just their parents.

What's the Difference between Beauview and Deerhurst Resort?

We were a bit humbled by the question asked over the phone today. It's a priviledge to be compared with the world famous hotel that hosted the G8 world leaders in 2010.

The first thing is size. Deerhurst is one of the largest resort hotels in Ontario with 400 rooms. Beauview Cottage Resort is one of the smallest. It has 6 self catering cottages.

Beauview has a maximum number of 26 guests. Deerhurst has well over 1000 guests.

Deerhurst is one of the largest employers in the area. Beauview is family run, owner operated by Nancy and Gord, with two part time cleaning staff.

Beauview offers cottages with personal hot tubs. Deerhurst has jacuzzi suites.

Both of us have canoes paddle boats, kayaks, water trampoline, water slide, (Deerhurst charges extra. Included in Beauview's rates)
Water skiing/tubing.

Both have high speed internet (though I think Deerhurst charges for theirs. Beauview doesn't)
Satellite TV, fireplaces, air conditioners

Deerhurst has a SPA. Beauview has RMT massage therapists that will come to your cottage.

Deerhurst has two golf courses and a swimming pool. Beauview does not. (There's 8 golf courses withing 30 minutes drive of Beauview, including the Bigwin Island Golf Course)

For dining, Deerhurst has a number of restaurants on site. Restaurants (fine dining to Tim Hortons) for Beauview are 15 minutes away in Huntsville.
Each cottage at Beauview has a kitchen and a gas BBQ grill on the deck, so you don't have to eat out if you don't want to.

For entertainment. Deerhurst has a piano bar and the Las Vegas Style Decades show. Beauview has a campfire with s'mores and marshmallows on a stick, down at the lake under the stars. (We send our guests to Deerhurst for the show!)

We just received two new Futurebeach paddleboats for children. These boats can seat one child that weighs up to a maximum of 70 pounds. You paddle with your hands by turning the paddle wheels.

Baby Moose Sighting in Algonquin Park

This is my first baby moose sighting. I have trouble finding the full grown variety. Our guests see them and tell us about it and then when I go .... nothing!

Lately I have had better luck.

Yesterday, on our way back from visiting Suzanne in Ottawa we saw a mommy and a baby moose at KM43 and a big Bull moose at KM23 on HWy 60 in Algonquin park.

Can you guess how old the baby moose is? (they grow quick)

Our daughter Suzanne, played soccer throughout public school and then into High School. Beauview has sponsored a team every year for the last 15 years. Now that Suzanne has gone off to University, we still sponsor a team, wherever the need.

This year we sponsor twenty U14 (under the age of 14 ) mixed girls and boys house league team.

Spring 2011 Upgrades and Renos at Beauview

No sooner do we get all our cottages set up with 27 inch TVs then we start upgrading by adding 32 inch Flat Screen TV's to Cottage #2, #3 and #4. These TV's have all sorts of connections so you can hook in your camera, or computer to it.

The vinyl flooring was replaced in Cottage #4 and #6 with new sheet vinyl from Taylor Floor Covering in Huntsville.

A New culvert at our creek bridge and the excavation and replace of the old culvert was done by Barry VanClieaf of Baysville.

Four New BBQ's from Home Depot for Cottages 2 -5. Some were easier to put together than others... and yes - some of the electronic igniters work but some don't ! (Cottage #1 and 6 had new BBQ's last year)

Nancy bought a new Secret Garden playhouse for the children that is down at the waterfront.

Stairs to the lake and the first dock section at the water slide dock, have been replaced with a ramp and a new dock section.

Two new picnic tables replaced old ones. Others were repaired or retired.

And last but not least the BIG job was the bathroom renovation of Cottage #4 by MacKinnon Construction with painting by Doris Olivier of DOIT. New floor, new sound insulated walls, Lot's more room than before!

Lots of work done at Beauview on a Sunny Day

Thanks to my brother Rick for providing the labour and Mother Nature for providing a Sunny day.

The four new BBQ 's replaced the remaining older ones. Cottage- 2 -5 have new ones. (Cottages 1 and 6 got new ones last year)
They weigh between 85 and 100 pounds. (I know because I carried them home from the store)

Two people to get them onto the decks and take the old ones to the metal recycler.

Then on to the docks. As the ice was moving 2 weeks ago, it kept bashing our docks. No problem as most of them float and I just move them back after the ice leaves. All except for our one dock on posts. The ice bent this dock like an accordion, crushed the posts and it didn't bend back.
This week I built a new dock section, which needed 2 people to put the frame in the water. And then my brother did what he enjoys the most - while I put on new dock boards, he took a crowbar to the damaged dock. BIG smile on his face as he tore up the old dock. Then the power tools came out to cut it up.

We also took out the old stairs going to the lake by the swimming area. Crowbar and sledge hammer work there too. .. Lots of fun for my brother, the city office worker.

I am very luck to have my brother around to help.

I wonder if there are others who work at a desk job during the week that would like to do some manual labour on the weekend ... for Fun!?

Waiting for the Ice to Leave

Any day now the ice will leave our bay and not return again until November/ December. Usually it goes around the 22nd of April. But as you can see from the photo, it's still here!

Warm weather over the next few days will send it on its way.

I have seen Deer on the lake and at the side of the road but this is the first time this year that I've seen them come onto our property.

I saw my first robin yesterday. I have seen Canada Geese on the lake ice wondering why it hasn't melted yet! (last year it melted early) Chipmunks have scurried around outside the cottages. A fox ran across the road in front of me on Brunel Road.

...Lots of wildlife and birds to see at this time of year. Some snow in the background makes a great photo opportunity and there's no leaves on the trees to block your view.

Six Year old Cars Fanatic

This is Greg. He wasn't sure he wanted to stay at Beauview. He couldn't remember being here before. (That was 4 years ago when he was 2 years old) He looked at our website and thought he'd give us a try.

Greg skated on our ice rink. and played in the snow with his parents and grandparents.

Turns out Greg is a Cars fanatic. He carries a Lightning McQueen car with him wherever he goes. .. that's what he's holding in the photo.

He found a Cars Video that they watched over and over again. Grandma says that they all know the words by heart!

I took some photos of snow out my window. Yesterday it was just snow piled on the deck railing . Today they are characters and scenes created in the snow by the wind.

My daughter Suzanne is studying to be a clinical psychologist ... so she'd have fun with "what do you see in the snow" (sort of like the ink blots pictures they show you)

Skate or Walk on the Lake of Bays

This is a special time on the lake that doesn't happen very often. We get a melt and a refreeze with little or no snow. That means now you can skate across the lake. (It's a little bumpy in places from the snowmobiles) What a neat "bragging rights" experience!

Up until now, you couldn't walk on the lake because there was snow with slush underneath and then the ice. It would get your boots stuck! ... Not anymore!

I shovelled off a brand new ice rink next to our present one. It's nice and smooth, no cracks or bumps and pretty level.

Bring your skates!

The snowmobile trail permits come in early December.

Rock Ridge usually opens for snowtubing on Dec 26 th. Hidden Valley opens on the weekend before Christmas and maybe earlier depending on the weather.

Snowmobiling happens starting about mid January.

We drove through Algonquin park to visit our daughter Suzanne in Ottawa. Algonquin Park got enough snow on Friday that they had to plow and sand HWY 60.

I took our motor boat into the marina for winter service and storage. Lucky for me that it's warm today. I got soaked from the wind and the spray as I went up the lake.

I didn't see any other boats on the lake or at docks as I passed by. Just after I got to the marina a storm front passed over Lake of Bays. Twice lucky that I didn't get caught in the rain.

For our guests safety, we are usually one of the first with their boat on the lake (Mid April this year) and the last to come ashore.

All our canoes, kayaks and peddleboats have been put away for the winter too.

Beauview has a number of new road signs put up in the last month. There's the new road sign at our entrance by Dallas Clarke, Huntsville and two new signs at the intersection of HWY 60 and Muskoka Rd. 9 (South Portage Rd.)

We also have been set up correctly on Google maps and in GPS devices.

So no matter whether you use paper or electronic directions, you'll be able to find Beauview!

Happy Thanksgiving - What did people do?

This has been a glorious Thanksgiving long weekend at Beauview with Sunny weather each day. We have guests from the U.S. and guests from Scotland. Many are young families. I'm glad I left all the toys out for them to play with!

What did people do?

One man went swimming. Kids played in the playgrounds, made sand castles. Played frizbee. Badminton. A number have gone out on the water, canoeing or out in the row boat. One family had a campfire down by the lake.

One family went to the Muskoka Heritage Place to ride the Train and see the Pioneer Village. Saturday was the last day for train rides this year. The Village will be open for Halloween.

There's still lots of leaves to look at too.

Where's Waldo, ... the chipmunk?

Waldo the chipmunk, was harassing me while I was trying to work this afternoon. He'd come up close and sniff. Then as soon as I went to get the camera, he went hiding in the leaves.

I finally got a picture of him.

Then the chickadees starting doing the same thing! ... but they wouldn't stay in one place.

Saturday Screams on Lake of Bays

Screams of "OHHH that's CCCOLD!" went across the lake on Saturday afternoon. Thank goodness for hot tubs. A couple decided to get "refreshed" with a dip in the lake and then ran back to their personal hot tub to get warmed up. Envigorating!

I stood by in case I had to call 911 but I wasn't needed.
