The May Long weekend is the unofficial start of Summer. We had a german couple stay with us this week as they were passing through. They came for one night and ended up staying for four nights! They went canoeing on our lake and hiked in Algonquin park.... and took lots of pictures.

The Weather forecast says rain all day, today and yet as I'm writing this, there's sunshine coming in my window! You can't always believe the weather report. And if you did, you never go outside!

Deer come to paint the cottages

Two or three deer have come to visit a number of times when I have been outside this past week. I'm either painting or putting out lawn furniture. When I turn around - there they are!

Once I see them and they see me, they are off again. I'll have to keep my camera with me at all times. - even when I'm painting.

I've also seen a hawk, blue jays, robins, and loons.

The canoes, and paddelboats are ready to use. The water is around 50 degrees - COLD ! - so you don't want to fall in.
We get our motor boat today.

Wildlife Sightings - deer, turkeys, loons, and a fox

During my walks this week, I saw three deer crossing the road from the neighbour's property. Yesterday while travelling to Dorset on HWY 117, I saw two wild turkeys, and later on the way back I saw a fox.
Last night at the lake, I heard two loons calling and saw them fly overhead.

I've seen and heard geese too... but they don't count!

The Lake has returned -The Ice has left

Pretty much the same time each year the ice melts away and "leaves". Today is that day.

The lake has returned after being frozen for 4 months. It s hard to believe that 3 weeks ago, people were driving their pick up trucks on our bay to go ice fishing!

Now is a great time for Spring fishing for Trout. The lake is still freezing cold so the trout can be caught close to the surface in 15 - 20 feet of water.

First Campfire of the Year

We had our first campfire of the year tonight. A young family staying with us this weekend asked to have a fire for their 3 year old boy. His first campfire! We all helped set it up and dad did the honours to light it on fire.

With the warm weather this week, most of the snow has melted. The children's playground reappeared on Thursday. I set out some sand toys to play with too. The children are having a wonderful time.

Deer Caught on Video in April

When people ask about what is there to do at this time of year, I tell them about seeing nature up close. Before the leaves are back on the trees and while the snow is melting, is a perfect time to see wildlife and birds without the obstructions and without scaring them away.

Last Day of Ice Fishing

The Ice huts are supposed to be off Lake of Bays today. The last few weekends have been wonderful weather for ice fishing. The lake has stayed frozen enough for vehicles to go out on it.

Congratulations to Gabriela and Jim!

Jim asked Gabriela to marry him on frozen Lake of Bays under the moon and stars, last night. She accepted!

Gabriela also went skating for the first time on our ice rink and snow tubing at Rock Ridge park.
While they were skating over a dozen deer passed closeby on the lake.

Skating on the Lake at Easter

Easter is early this year, the Winter has stayed later than usual. Our guests have had a lot of fun skating and playing ball hockey on our ice rink. Its one of the few outdoor ice rinks that is still open in the area. They are going snowtubing at Rock Ridge later today.

Even though its "Spring", it is a great weekend to play in the snow.

Yesterday was a glorious sunny day. I couldn't stay in doors all day so I went looking for deer. There are two places where folks have winter deer feeding stations. Especially this time of year there's not a lot for them to eat.

March Break Fantastic Winter Conditions

We had mild temperatures earlier this week changed to 10 - 15 cms of fresh snow last night.
The people staying with us raved about how great the snowmobile trails are after the fresh dump of snow.
The melt on Monday made our ice rink the best its been in years! smoooooth

We are also offering some free passes to our guests to use at the Rock Ridge Snow Tubing Park in Huntsville.

Should be lots of fun for our guests next week, during March Break.

Winter Weekend Activities

This past weekend we had the privilege of having two men from Spain stay with us. This was their first experience with snow. They had a great time snowshoeing in Algonquin Park and walking on our frozen lake. Some of our other guests rented a snowmobile and went out on the trails on Saturday with a new 2 up Arctic Cat snowmobile.

We also had our neighbours come to visit. They used our ice rink on the lake. Skating and playing hockey. Great Fun!

Cecil and Stephanie decided to stay out snowmobiling a few extra days so they spent an overnight on the trip at Beauview.
They traveled from Burks Falls to Dwight to Dorset to Baysville to Beauview on great trails with little traffic for much of the way.

We have the pleasure of hosting one of the Women's Pond Hockey teams this weekend. They are called the Couch Potatoes from Alliston, Ontario
There are 24 rinks set up on the lake at the Deerhurst Resort with 140 teams.

They play four games plus championship rounds if successful.
