Lake of Bays Fishing Derby

Each year, late in March, Mel and the boys come to Beauview a father and son and friends getaway. They come to fish Lake of Bays.
So far they haven't caught too many fish. The largest is a Lake Trout 5 1/2 pounds.
No ice huts required. They are very mobile. If one spot doesn't work, they move on to another spot.

Deer Herd put on a Show

At 9 am Monday morning, a deer herd put on a show for our guests. There were seven of them and they walked and grazed through our property, very close to the cottages. We have guests staying with us from the U.S. and from U.K. - a great experience for them!
You stand still and let them walk closer and closer towards you. (their eyesight isn't that great)
I can't remember seeing this many deer close up on our property, at one time!

First Spring Birds Returning

Here's photos of Goldfinches and a robin who have just returned to the area.
These pictures are taken right next to our house on the sumach trees. I have an 18X zoom lens on my camera so I don't scare them away.

Fishing for Speckled Trout

Here's a photo of our neighbour ice fishing in front of Beauview. Our bay on Lake of Bays, is famous for Speckled Trout.
He used his power auger to drill a number of holes. The ice is still about 16 inches thick today.
They are so confident they will get fish that they have set up a BBQ grill on their dock to have a shore lunch!

Bear Tagging in Algonquin Park
The Rick Mercer Report on CBC television recently went into Algonquin Park to participate in Black Bear tagging.
We have guests asking about bears all the time. They are out in the bush but we never see any.
This video lets you see bear babies up close and personal.

Kokkas Corners has reopened in Baysville
Kokkas Korners has reopened under new management in Baysville. With the fire at Wendigos, there really hasn't been any place to eat in Baysville since the fall.
From Baysville News - Linda Fisher:
It is a pleasure to announce that Kristy Lacroix has decided to reopen Kokkas Korners. Kristy is the daughter of Bob and Linda Lacroix of Baysville. It is a wonderful thing when someone in a community picks up the pieces of a business gone awry and decides to make a go of it. The opening was a week ago, and by all accounts the diner will continue to present delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners for all tastes. The new chef will also present healthy choices along with the old favourites.

Is it Time to Come out?!

Here's a photo I took at 7:30 am , minus 20 C , March 1st of a Chipmunk. He looked cold and I really wanted to bring him inside to warm up but I didn't.
Our guests this weekend saw lots of wildlife. Many deer and two foxes running across the lake. Many birds too.

Snow Scoop Riding - a new winter fun activity
What did the kids have the most fun doing this weekend besides skating , tobogganing, snow shoeing, snow tubing ... it was snow scoop riding!
We have a snow scoop down at the lake to clear off the rink but it wasn't used for that - One of the dads pushed it around the ice rink with one or two kids inside. Great Fun. Just the right size!

Muskoka Snowmobile Trails are OPEN
There was conflicting reports today about the Muskoka Snowmobile trails. Some of the trails are closed around the Bracebridge and Port Carling area but they are all open in our area around Huntsville, Dwight, Dorset and Baysville.
(There's a fight between some of the landowners and the District of Muskoka government and they are using the snowmobile trails as leverage.)
For all the detailed trail info please got to :
