Why do Woodpeckers Peck on Metal?

As the sun was rising this morning, I went for a walk down the road. I do it for exercise and as part of my neighbourhood watch duties for all the cottagers.

It was quiet and peaceful until I heard this loud banging up ahead. Trying to locate the woodpecker, I saw him fly off from a metal road sign.

Why do woodpeckers peck on a metal sign that doesn't hold any bugs or food for them?

seriously, it's my understanding it is a mating call. I have seen them in the city on the mteal telephone poles.

I also understand that its a "marking" of territory to other birds.

I think they just like to be heard! ;-)

my friend told me it is to remove old dried sap off their beaks. Sounds reasonable.
