A True BIG Fish Story?

Our neighbours Mike and Johnny have an ice hut out on Lake of Bays near Langmaids Island. Johnny tells me that Mike caught a 16 pound Lake Trout this week on his second attempt.
The first time, the fish took 30 feet of line with him and the second time they got him along with the 30 feet of line.
Mike and Johnny didn't have a camera but Mike did have his Blackberry. The only problem is that Mike didn't know how to use the camera in it. They flagged down a kid from another hut and he took the photo.

Johnny promised they'd email it to me... but I haven't seen it yet!
Maybe when Mike's kids are up at the cottage this weekend they can show him how to use the Blackberry camera.

I'll post the photo when I get it.

By the way, they put the fish back in the lake for other people to catch.

Chris and Sarah - Dancing in the Snow

It's minus 20 C but that doesn't stop these two from venturing outside. They were on the lake ice rink skating and playing hockey and then went dancing in the snow in our snowshoes.

Our First Snowmobilers of the 2009 Season

Our first snowmobilers of the season arrived on Friday afternoon. They took advantage of an early check in time and got on the trails right away. They got up to Deerhurst to check out the Pond Hockey and then over to Port Sydney for dinner. Returning just after dark.

People ask us whether we have parking for snowmobile trailers. Here's an example of a large crew cab truck and 4 sled enclosed trailer parked in our parking lot.

Not just Tracks - We see Deer!

There have been deer tracks traversing our waterfront each day. I 've seen deer on the lake in the distance. Today three deer walked across our waterfront "lawn" just after lunch time.

They didn't stay long. I heard that they like to eat the leftovers from Mike and Tracey's bird feeder across the road.

Snowmobile Trails are Open!

It's been a struggle for the Snowmobile Clubs to get their trails open this year. Lots of snow with lots of trees down across the trails, made it difficult to clear.

This weekend the trails are starting to open for the season. More trails will open in the next week or two. And the lakes are still unsafe to cross.

You can see the latest trail conditions by going to our local snowmobile clubs' websites:

Outdoor Winter Activities in January

Our guests during the Christmas and New Years holiday did a number of outdoor activities while they stayed with us at Beauview.

They went tubing at Rock Ridge Snow Tubing Park - see video , Downhill skiing at Hidden Valley Ski area - see their website , cross country skiing at Arrowhead and Algonquin Park, and Snow shoeing at Ragged Fall Park (which is supposed to be spectacular with the ice and lots of water flowing over the falls).

One couple went tubing for the first time and had a blast. They never would have tried it had we not suggested it.

The snowmobile trails are not open due to all the storm damage with lots of fallen trees. The clubs are working long hours to open them as soon as possible.

Our own children's toboggan hill got a lot of use and our ice rink on the lake has now been cleared off. There's about 4 inches of solid ice under it.

The rules for ice safety are:
3" (7cm) or less STAY OFF
4" (10cm) walking, cross country skiing
6" (12cm) one snowmobile
8"-12" (20-30cm) one car or small pickup
12"-15" (30-38cm) one medium truck (pickup or van)

Blue Jays on New Years Day

It's cold outside this morning - 27 C ( or - 10 F for our American friends) I don't want to go outside yet!
The sun is coming up and what do I see but a bunch of Blue Jays out our window flying from tree to tree.
Here's a picture of one that sat by our front window for a few minutes.
