We survived a 3 day Power Outage!

From last Sunday morning until this afternoon, we had a power outage due to a storm with 100 mile an hour winds. Lots of branches down on our property and lots of trees down on hydro wires throughout Muskoka. 40,000 homes in Muskoka without power. 250,000 homes in southern Ontario without power.

At the time, we had guests staying with us in a number of cottages. Our water system is on a back up generator so the water works and everyone's toilet still flushes. The cottages all have gas fireplaces for heat and most have gas stoves for cooking. The hot water lasted for the first day and then it was heated on the stove.

You could still go tobogganing, skiing, or snowshoeing. Part of Huntsville had power so you could even have a meal out.

At night, the flashlights and glow sticks came on for light. People did activities they wouldn't normally do. Played games by flashlight.

One of the best was children in one cottage putting on a show using the glow sticks to create light dancing to music. Lots of imagination. Very cool!

Some used their laptops to play DVD movies. We charged up guests cell phones and laptops using our generator. We plugged in a crockpot dinner for one family that was ready when they came back from a day of snowshoeing at Ragged Falls. (It smelled great but we were good and didn't scoop any for ourselves!)

Only one family left early and it was because they had a new baby with them. All the rest stayed and didn't leave ahead of schedule.

What a great time for family to reconnect!

One couple, here on a romantic getaway, said they enjoyed playing cribbage by flashlight - yeah sure!

First Visit of Deer on the lake

The lake isn't quite frozen enough for humans but the deer seem to think its Okay to walk on. Here's some deer coming close to our waterfront to look us over.

Lots of Snow to Clear

We had to bring in the BIG equipment. Our neighbour Grant came with his tractor and 6 foot snowblower to knock down our piles of snow and widen out the driveway and parking lot.
Reinald comes with his Jeep to plow every time it snows, but the piles were getting too high.

Gord plays saxophone with the Huntsville Community Band. ( He's wearing the santa hat)
They just did a performance at the Muskoka Landing Care Centre where one of the numbers was by the Sax Trio - a jazz version of We Three Kings.
Last month the band played at a local retirement residence. In February, they are headliners at the Algonquin Theatre for a benefit concert!

Bring in the Crane

We upgraded our propane systems by getting a new supplier Moore Propane.

For our two large tanks they had to bring in a crane truck to move them. The crane operator has a wireless remote control. He's able to navigate the long arm around trees and branches. Its amazing what he can do.

Winter has come Early

Last weekend Winter came and it hasn't left!

We had heavy wet snow last weekend which took down trees and power lines. We lost our power for Sunday and Monday. Our guests were okay as we have a generator for the water system and the cottages have gas cooking stoves and are heated with gas fireplaces which don't need electricity to run.

... As long as the toilets flush we're good to go!

One sleepy guest thought that we were trying to tell him to go home early by turning off his power. ... We wouldn't do that!

There's lots of deer around looking for acorns from our oak tree in the light snow. I've been trying to get a picture of them but its usually dark when I see them.

Here's a photo I took this morning of our bay on Lake of Bays starting to freeze over.

Happy 80th Birthday Grandpa

Grandpa Bill Morrison (and Grandma Grace) has been there to support us throughout the years as Suzanne was growing up and when we decided to escape the city and move to Beauview in Huntsville. He's done a lot of painting, cleaning and woodwork over the years. Some of our guests will remember them from our hot dog BBQ's.

Here's a photo of Grandpa Bill surrounded by his family at his 80th birthday party held this past week at Morrison jr' s house in Orono.

He shares the same birthday as Mickey Mouse who is also 80 years old this week. (He gets a lot of Mickey Mouse stuff for presents)

Happy Anniversary Nancy and Gord!

This week we celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. We picked November the 11th so that Gord could remember it. It's also Gord's little sister Sandra's 50th Birthday, so she reminds him too.

Thirty years ago we were both working in downtown Toronto at Yonge and Bloor as office workers at two Insurance company Head offices down the street from each other, with less than an hour commute. You could smoke in the office (Gord had a guy that smoked Turkish cigarettes in the desk next to him that smelled like he was burning trash.) computer programming was done with punch card decks and you could get a seat on the subway.... a different world!

For the last 15 years, we have been here in Muskoka at the Beauview Cottage Resort. It doesn't seem that long ago. We're glad we made the move up north.

Wakeboarding behind the Steamship Segwun !?

Gravenhurst, Ontario the home of the Royal Mail Steamship the Segwun, was recently visited by Rick Mercer from CBC Television. You get a tour of the ship, some great scenery and you can see Rick trying to wakeboard behind the Segwun. What a hoot!
Gravenhurst is about 30 minutes south of Beauview just off HWY 11. The steamship operates May to October.

Don't Believe the Weatherman!

Here's another video clip in my series on Don't Believe the Weatherman.

It's Saturday afternoon. The weather forecast says cloudy and rain until next Wednesday. No sun anytime soon. How depressing!

But look out our window >> the sun has come to the rescue! We can go outside.

Just after I filmed this video clip, a loon came swimming by. Very special! If we believed the weather forecast, we'd be watching reruns on TV and not enjoying the day.

The Chipmunks are Back!

Our guests in the Summer noticed that there wasn't many chipmunks around. I'm not sure why. These furry little guys are not tame but close to it. They will come up close to people if you are patient and not threatening. Very entertaining to watch! The stripe pattern on their back keeps them apart from squirrels, so you can tell the difference. Squirrels are not as friendly.
This time of year, there's lots of acorns to feed on. The chipmunk hibernates for the winter so now is the time to store up a large food supply for winter.

Accu Window Weather for Ontario

As you can see from my recent BLOG entries, it gets very upsetting to us when the we are experiencing beautiful weather and yet the weather reports show something completely different.

People in Ontario rely on the weather reports as they plan their day or their weekend recreation.

There have been many times in the last year when the weather report has said rain and cloudy when we are experiencing sunshine and blue skies. See my previous BLOG videos as examples.

To let people see what the weather is actually like at a particular location in Ontario, a new website has been created http://www.accu-window-weather.com/

Like the name implies, it does weather forecasting the old fashioned way - by looking out the window! In this case, you are invited to look out the window of various places throughout Ontario using their webcam.

Last Day of Summer - But is it?

Today is the last day of Summer. The weather forecast shows a high of 23 degrees C with Sun and Cloud. But look at the forecast for next week .... it looks like Summer all of next week too!

We had guests this week that went canoeing in Algonquin Park, saw a cow and baby moose. The moose grazed in the same area for about 20 minutes before moving off. A great sighting!

The fall colours are starting to show on the trees. This a picture taken this week on Lake of Bays.

This weekend is the Huntsville Fall Fair and the Downtown Huntsville Antique and Classic Car show with over 250 cars and the world's largest homemade bake sale.

Come to Muskoka for Wild Mushrooms ???

We have a family staying with us that goes on trips , not to see deer or moose or loons but to see the area's wild mushrooms. It's called Mycology and the people are mycologists.
There are Mushroom Clubs all over. Also called Mycological Societies. Here's a link to the Toronto Mushroom Club
They conduct "forays" for their members to look and identify wild mushrooms and other fungi.

From wikipedia: Mycology (from the Greek μύκης, meaning "fungus") is the branch of biology concerned with the study of fungi, including their genetic and biochemical properties, their taxonomy, and their use to humans as a source for tinder, medicinals (e.g., penicillin), food (e.g., beer, wine, cheese, edible mushrooms) and entheogens, as well as their dangers, such as poisoning or infection.

A Baysville Landmark is Destoyed by Fire

It was a sad day in Baysville today. Overnight the Lincoln Lodge building, in downtown Baysville, across from the dam, caught fire after midnight. The fire crews came quickly but it didn't take long to destroy the old building. It had been the recent home of Wendigo's Bar and Grill Restaurant who had just done some major renovations. Thank goodness, no one was hurt by the fire.
Here's the story as written by the local newspaper - the Huntsville Forester
A devastating blaze destroyed a historic lodge and landmark in the Baysville community early Wednesday morning.
Lake of Bays fire crews responded to the fire at Lincoln Lodge, which housed Wendigo Bar and Grill, at about 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 10, said Huntsville Lake of Bays fire chief Steve Hernen.
“It was heavily involved when they (the first crews) arrived,” said Hernen.

The fire crew called for backup and both Huntsville and Port Cunnington fire departments responded.

In total, it took 45 firefighters until about 3:30 a.m. to get the blaze under control, said Hernen.
No one was in the building at the time of the blaze and no injuries were reported, said Hernen.
The building housed one resident in the third floor apartment, a co-owner of the building, but he was away on a fishing trip, said George Drennan of Bay Street Boys Inc., one of the three co-owners.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Hernen indicated.

Ladies from Austria

Four ladies from Austria came to stay with us this past week. They went to Algonquin park to hike, see wildlife, the Visitors Centre and the Logging Museum. The trees were already starting to turn colours. The only complaint was that they never saw a bear! ( I think it's good they didn't see a bear!)
They found Beauview on the internet back in the Winter when they were planning this trip.
Monika, the organizer said that they are doing 3 weeks of activities in 2 weeks. Visits to Toronto, Beauview, Ottawa, and Niagara Falls.
We feel special that we were included on the list of places to visit!

Stronger Internet Access for our Neighbours on Lake of Bays

In June, we invited Candlelight Communications and MCCSolutions to put a high speed internet access point on our roof to give our neighbours internet access.
It has been so successful that they came back yesterday to upgrade the receiver with a stronger Grid type antenna. (kinda looks like a clothes line on its side?!)

The neighbours already on the network should see faster speeds and it gives the ability to add more clients. (it also gives our Beauview guests higher speeds too)

Summer 2008 Success Story

You've already seen Christian in some recent posts being a scary tiger and doing wonderful artwork.

The big news is that Christian is not afraid of going in the water anymore! Last year, Christian screamed whenever he went near the water. This year, he walks in the lake, close to shore, plays on the water trampoline and swims with the help of his parents.

This year, swimming in the lake is FUN! What a great accomplishment. Congratulations Christian!
