What's the Difference between Beauview and Deerhurst Resort?

We were a bit humbled by the question asked over the phone today. It's a priviledge to be compared with the world famous hotel that hosted the G8 world leaders in 2010.

The first thing is size. Deerhurst is one of the largest resort hotels in Ontario with 400 rooms. Beauview Cottage Resort is one of the smallest. It has 6 self catering cottages.

Beauview has a maximum number of 26 guests. Deerhurst has well over 1000 guests.

Deerhurst is one of the largest employers in the area. Beauview is family run, owner operated by Nancy and Gord, with two part time cleaning staff.

Beauview offers cottages with personal hot tubs. Deerhurst has jacuzzi suites.

Both of us have canoes paddle boats, kayaks, water trampoline, water slide, (Deerhurst charges extra. Included in Beauview's rates)
Water skiing/tubing.

Both have high speed internet (though I think Deerhurst charges for theirs. Beauview doesn't)
Satellite TV, fireplaces, air conditioners

Deerhurst has a SPA. Beauview has RMT massage therapists that will come to your cottage.

Deerhurst has two golf courses and a swimming pool. Beauview does not. (There's 8 golf courses withing 30 minutes drive of Beauview, including the Bigwin Island Golf Course)

For dining, Deerhurst has a number of restaurants on site. Restaurants (fine dining to Tim Hortons) for Beauview are 15 minutes away in Huntsville.
Each cottage at Beauview has a kitchen and a gas BBQ grill on the deck, so you don't have to eat out if you don't want to.

For entertainment. Deerhurst has a piano bar and the Las Vegas Style Decades show. Beauview has a campfire with s'mores and marshmallows on a stick, down at the lake under the stars. (We send our guests to Deerhurst for the show!)

Water trampoline, Moonwalk and Iceberg launched

Our water trampoline, iceberg waterslide and New 20 foot moonwalk have been launched on Lake of Bays.

Playgrounds and Sand

We dumped a whole truck load of new sand in our playground and waterfront areas. There are new toys for the payground too!

New Children's Size Paddleboats

We just received two new Futurebeach paddleboats for children. These boats can seat one child that weighs up to a maximum of 70 pounds. You paddle with your hands by turning the paddle wheels.

Baby Moose Sighting in Algonquin Park

This is my first baby moose sighting. I have trouble finding the full grown variety. Our guests see them and tell us about it and then when I go .... nothing!

Lately I have had better luck.

Yesterday, on our way back from visiting Suzanne in Ottawa we saw a mommy and a baby moose at KM43 and a big Bull moose at KM23 on HWy 60 in Algonquin park.

Can you guess how old the baby moose is? (they grow quick)

There's a group that comes every year and they never seem to have any trouble catching fish.

Then Mike prepares the fillets, Al cooks them up and everyone staying at Beauview gets delicious fish for dinner!

Beauview Cottage's 2011 Soccer Team

Our daughter Suzanne, played soccer throughout public school and then into High School. Beauview has sponsored a team every year for the last 15 years. Now that Suzanne has gone off to University, we still sponsor a team, wherever the need.

This year we sponsor twenty U14 (under the age of 14 ) mixed girls and boys house league team.

Spring 2011 Upgrades and Renos at Beauview

No sooner do we get all our cottages set up with 27 inch TVs then we start upgrading by adding 32 inch Flat Screen TV's to Cottage #2, #3 and #4. These TV's have all sorts of connections so you can hook in your camera, or computer to it.

The vinyl flooring was replaced in Cottage #4 and #6 with new sheet vinyl from Taylor Floor Covering in Huntsville.

A New culvert at our creek bridge and the excavation and replace of the old culvert was done by Barry VanClieaf of Baysville.

Four New BBQ's from Home Depot for Cottages 2 -5. Some were easier to put together than others... and yes - some of the electronic igniters work but some don't ! (Cottage #1 and 6 had new BBQ's last year)

Nancy bought a new Secret Garden playhouse for the children that is down at the waterfront.

Stairs to the lake and the first dock section at the water slide dock, have been replaced with a ramp and a new dock section.

Two new picnic tables replaced old ones. Others were repaired or retired.

And last but not least the BIG job was the bathroom renovation of Cottage #4 by MacKinnon Construction with painting by Doris Olivier of DOIT. New floor, new sound insulated walls, Lot's more room than before!

Lots of work done at Beauview on a Sunny Day

Thanks to my brother Rick for providing the labour and Mother Nature for providing a Sunny day.

The four new BBQ 's replaced the remaining older ones. Cottage- 2 -5 have new ones. (Cottages 1 and 6 got new ones last year)
They weigh between 85 and 100 pounds. (I know because I carried them home from the store)

Two people to get them onto the decks and take the old ones to the metal recycler.

Then on to the docks. As the ice was moving 2 weeks ago, it kept bashing our docks. No problem as most of them float and I just move them back after the ice leaves. All except for our one dock on posts. The ice bent this dock like an accordion, crushed the posts and it didn't bend back.
This week I built a new dock section, which needed 2 people to put the frame in the water. And then my brother did what he enjoys the most - while I put on new dock boards, he took a crowbar to the damaged dock. BIG smile on his face as he tore up the old dock. Then the power tools came out to cut it up.

We also took out the old stairs going to the lake by the swimming area. Crowbar and sledge hammer work there too. .. Lots of fun for my brother, the city office worker.

I am very luck to have my brother around to help.

I wonder if there are others who work at a desk job during the week that would like to do some manual labour on the weekend ... for Fun!?

Waiting for the Ice to Leave

Any day now the ice will leave our bay and not return again until November/ December. Usually it goes around the 22nd of April. But as you can see from the photo, it's still here!

Warm weather over the next few days will send it on its way.

Deer at Beauview April 2, 2011

I have seen Deer on the lake and at the side of the road but this is the first time this year that I've seen them come onto our property.

I saw my first robin yesterday. I have seen Canada Geese on the lake ice wondering why it hasn't melted yet! (last year it melted early) Chipmunks have scurried around outside the cottages. A fox ran across the road in front of me on Brunel Road.

...Lots of wildlife and birds to see at this time of year. Some snow in the background makes a great photo opportunity and there's no leaves on the trees to block your view.

Six Year old Cars Fanatic

This is Greg. He wasn't sure he wanted to stay at Beauview. He couldn't remember being here before. (That was 4 years ago when he was 2 years old) He looked at our website and thought he'd give us a try.

Greg skated on our ice rink. and played in the snow with his parents and grandparents.

Turns out Greg is a Cars fanatic. He carries a Lightning McQueen car with him wherever he goes. .. that's what he's holding in the photo.

He found a Cars Video that they watched over and over again. Grandma says that they all know the words by heart!

Nature is an artform

I took some photos of snow out my window. Yesterday it was just snow piled on the deck railing . Today they are characters and scenes created in the snow by the wind.

My daughter Suzanne is studying to be a clinical psychologist ... so she'd have fun with "what do you see in the snow" (sort of like the ink blots pictures they show you)

Do you see the horse scaling the mountain, the dolphin jumping out of the water, the T Rex dinosaur, the ship in high seas?

Skate or Walk on the Lake of Bays

This is a special time on the lake that doesn't happen very often. We get a melt and a refreeze with little or no snow. That means now you can skate across the lake. (It's a little bumpy in places from the snowmobiles) What a neat "bragging rights" experience!

Up until now, you couldn't walk on the lake because there was snow with slush underneath and then the ice. It would get your boots stuck! ... Not anymore!

I shovelled off a brand new ice rink next to our present one. It's nice and smooth, no cracks or bumps and pretty level.

Bring your skates!

Community Band

Our Huntsville Community Band along with a number of High School bands, were on stage last night at the Algonquin Theatre performing as part of a fund raiser for Hospice Huntsville.
